China plans mass exodus from quake zone
MIANYANG, China – Chinese authorities have begun evacuating an additional 40,000 people in Beichuan county in the wake of potential flooding, CNN reports. While the total number of evacuees now stands at around 200,000, the number could rise to as much as 1.3 million in the event of mass flooding from that lakes that formed after the deadly earthquake.
Initial reports of a large-scale evacuation seemed to be incorrect though, as the Chinese government reported that they were simply conducting a drill in the event that the 1.3 million people needed to be relocated.
