Drought Forces Barcelona To Ship In Water
BARCELONA, Spain – Suffering from the worst drought in 70 years, Barcelona began shipping in water from its neighbors to offset the expected influx of tourists this spring and summer. The drought has already emptied much of the Mediano reservoir.
The regional government of Catalonia, of which Barcelona is the capital, plans to ship in 438 million gallons (1.66 million cubic meters) of water via six monthly ships. The shipments have already begun to arrive, from as nearby as Tarragona and as far away as Marseille, France. The shipments are planned to continue until a desalination plant is finished next spring.
