A movement to create recreation opportunities on New York City waterways that have long been polluted by industrial waste is also spurring environmental cleanups and education, The New York Times reported. The North Brooklyn Boat Club, for example, is revitalizing a portion of Newton Creek, a Superfund site in which the club paddles.
Water and Business
Countries and businesses will need to improve cooperation over water resources as demand grows and supplies decline in the next 50 years, the Guardian reported. Transboundary water management will be especially important because approximately half of all water resources are shared over borders.
Water Scarcity
Food security and hydropower generation are expected to decline in eastern Kenya due to below-average rainfall, according to forecasts from the country’s Meteorological Department, Reuters reported. Other areas of the country should receive normal or above-normal rains.
Water wells west of San Antonio, Texas are beginning to run dry, a consequence of persistent drought, My San Antonio reported. Residents have been forced to rely temporarily on water stored in tanks while deeper wells are drilled.
